Description

This is a nice example of Civil War breach loading rifle patented in 1858 by James.H. Merrill and produced in Baltimore for Union Cavalry in two distinct patterns. The overall production number was around 15000 pieces of both first and second model. Plus there were a few carbine and rifle conversions to Merrill design. It was used mainly by Union troops.

This is a second type Merrill, without the patchbox, manufactured in 1862. It was loaded with paper cartidges in .54 caliber that were percussion cups.
